July - Win and 2nd cat for Karl PDF Print E-mail

European Sprint Triathlon Championships - 03.07.10
Having both qualified earlier in the season Kirstie and Richard Hamilton made the trip over to Ireland to compete in the European Championships.  Excellent performances saw age category placings of 7th for Richard and 17th for Kirstie.

Steel Cycles Super Saturday Series - 03.07.10
A good field took the start line of this 2/3/4 cat race run over 55 miles.  Karl Denton rode well to get in the winning break and placed 4th overall to gain 17 points.

Eric Biddulph Memorial Road Race - 04.07.10

The following day Karl lined up with Dan Shoreman for this 3/4 cat race promoted by Huddersfield Star Wheelers.  Near gale force winds made the going tough with the bunch down to 10mph on the long drag up to the finish line on each lap.  With four laps to go Karl made his move and was joined by Karl Downes (Star Bikes).  The two worked well together to stay clear of the bunch with 'our' Karl taking the sprint and his first road race win.  That brought Karl's points total for the weekend to 32 and gained him a 2nd cat licence.  Dan Shoreman also rode well to finish 15th.

National XC MTB Points Series - 03.07.10
Round 4 was at Dalby Forest and Nick Butcher took to the line in the Sport category.  Although on familiar ground, Nick was up against it as he was gridded on the last row of 40 riders due to not having ridden any of the earlier rounds. Nick had a great start and was 10th into the single track and quickly worked his way up to 6th.  Nick took the lead by riding through the infamous 'Worry Gill' and eventually finished 2nd to James Lister (Torq Preformance).

Otley CC 25m TT - 04.07.2010
Stephen Wood came away with a great result on the tough Red Wall 25m course placing 7th, only 1.5mins off third spot.

Grand Prix Series
Dan Shoreman added to both his points tally, and his reputation as YV's circuit race specialist, at the Regional B Support Races at both Colne (14th July) and Blackburn (21 July).  Dan placed 9th at Colne and improved to 6th at Blackburn.

North East Criterium League
Despite (in his own words) minimal training and still being overweight, Richard Cleathero has been riding well in this series of crit races for 4th cats based at Hetton Lyons Country Park.  Finishing 9th and 6th in two of the races gave him a total of 5 points, leaving him needing 5 more from the next race to move up to 3rd cat.
The bunch was altogether on the last lap and so Richard was looking to place 5th or better to get the necessary points.  Unfortunately just before the final corner Richard was baulked and found himself in 6th place with a fair gap to 5th.  However Richard had a great sprint and managed to pass 4 of the riders finishing less than a bike length behind the winner.

Due probably to the euphoria of gaining his 3rd cat license, Richard did not rest on his laurels.  Instead he immediatly changed his number over and lined up for the 3/4 cat race that started 10 minutes later!  Predictably Richard suffered for the first half of the race but then got a second wind and stayed near the front of the bunch in the closing stages.  The race split on the final lap and Richard made it into the leading group of 11 riders.  However when it came to the sprint Richard's legs told him he had done enough for the day and he rolled in 11th.

Drighlington BC 25m TT - 10.07.10
Five YV's took to the start line for this event on the V236 at Topcliffe which was run off in (unusually) warm conditions.  Nigel Goscinski lowered his own vets club record to 55.48 (13th place) whilst John Woods and Stephen Wood set new pb's of 56.27 and 57.03 respectively.  Fastest YV time of the day went to Mike Marshall who placed 7th with 54.55 whilst a below-par Doug Hart came in 15th with 55.59.

Wolds RT 10m TT - 24.07.10
Reasonable, but not great, conditions saw Michael Hutchinson finally break Bradley Wiggins competition record by one second with 17.57 on the V718 at South Cave.  Not to be outdone(!) Stephen Wood continued his recent good form to also record a new pb, and his first 20 minute ride with 20.58.  Stephen was joined by good performances by Nigel Goscinski (20.54) and Doug Hart (20.24).

Hope XC MTB Race Series Round 3 - 30.07.10
Having won the first round, but DNF'd the second, Nick Butcher was hoping for better luck in the 3rd round of this series based in Lee Quarry.  Running tubeless tyres paid off with very dry conditions leaving a lot of exposed rock in the quarry resulting in less than half the starters finishing.  Nick had an incident free race and was able to use his good form to hold off the chasers to notch up another win in the Racer category.

VTTA (all ages) 25m TT - 31.07.10
Stephen Wood rounded off July in style with his third pb in as many weeks.  Back on the V236 course where Steve had set his earlier pb of 57:03, this time out he recorded an excellent 56.41 for 8th place on the day.

Tadcaster Evening League
July saw some great performances in the evening league.  Most noteabley John Woods continued his challenge at the top of the table with three second places, before securing his first league win with 23.10 on a blustery night on the Tadcaster-Sherburn course, edging Richard Hamilton into second pace with 23.20.  The previous week Nigel Goscinski had made a rare appearance at the League and come away with a victory.  Hugh Smith and Mark Glynn both secured a handful of top 10 and top 5 finishes.  There were other rides during the month from Richard Reynolds, Karen Glynn, Kirstie Hamilton and new member Dave Virden.
