Revolution 23, National cross and more
Revolution track - 10 January The third event of season six saw another capacity crowd and YV's own Ashley Marshall again taking on the best young riders in the country in the DHL Future Stars series. Although not repeating his attacking heroics of the previous meeting, Ashley did ride more consistently over the four events, riding at the front of the large pack, helping to reel in attacks and competing for sprint points in the Points race. Being at the front also meant he escaped the numerous crashes and carnage in two events - a great spectacle for the crowd, not so good if you're at the bottom of the heap! National Cyclo-Cross Champs - 10/11 January Darren Bibb and Denise Shackleton made the short trip over to Peel Park, Bradford for the National Cross Championships. Whilst the challenging course was the same for both days, the conditions were very different. For the Vets race on Saturday Darren had to contend with freezing temperatures, which resulted in hard ground and very quick racing. Twenty four hours later milder temperatures saw Denise contending with the more traditional mud as well as near gale force winds. However it was not too muddy for Hugh Porter to comment on our great looking kit over the PA system, as he had the previous day with Darren. Darren has also been competing in the winter long Yorkshire Points Series, and a series of solid displays has seen Darren finish 16th overall in the Vet standings. Festive club events Doug Hart and Ashley Marshall were up bright and early on 1 January for a ride out to the Calder Clarion New Years Day 5 at Wakefield. Ash placed 4th and Doug 2nd behind winner Ian Cooke. Mike Marshall had shown how it should be done a week earlier, taking first place in a Boxing Day 10 on his home turf in Lancashire. Wakefield Cross - 21 December Denise Shackleton produced her best result of the cross season at Thornes Park in Wakefield. Despite an early crash in the woods Denise finished as first lady and an impressive 19th out of 36 in the Vets/Womens field. Rutland CC 10 - 13 December Seeing his eight year old club 10 record go earlier in the season seems to have belatedly spurred Greg Thorley into action. Greg wiped the dust of his race bike to open (and close) his 2008 race season with a top ten finish. |
